A Los Angeles judge sentenced rapper Tory Lanez to 10 years behind bars on Tuesday, and the only person to blame is himself, despite what his fans say.
In December 2022, Tory was found guilty of assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm and negligent discharge of a gun for the July 2020 shooting of rapper Megan Thee Stallion after they left Kylie Jenner’s house party.
According to TMZ, the Los Angeles Superior Court granted the rapper to say a few words, in which he used the opportunity to plead with the judge to allow him to prove himself. Tory told the court he had a son who needed him and claimed he was not a monster, apologizing for his mistake and promising to improve.
NPR reported that he spoke about Megan, stating that the two were friends and she was “someone I still care dearly for to this day” despite her feelings toward him. Tory thought he was doing something when he spoke about how he and Megan bonded over losing their mothers.
Although Megan didn’t appear in court for the sentencing, she wrote a statement that read, “For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.”
During a press conference outside the courthouse, Tory’s lawyer, Jose Baez, who represented Casey Anthony then, voiced his disapproval of the verdict.
“We’re extremely disappointed that Tory did not get the sentence that we had certainly hoped for,” Baez said. “I think the sentence handed down was incredibly harsh. I have seen cases — vehicular homicide and other cases — where there’s death, and the person still gets less than 10 years. In this case, to get a 10-year sentence is extreme. And really just another example of someone being punished for their celebrity status.”
No, it’s a punishment for his heinous actions. Haters flooded Megan’s Instagram comments, hoping she felt guilty, but Megan is living her best life and healing from Tory’s actions. Yes, he’s a Black man, but he should’ve thought of that before he did what he did.
