The award recognizes the hip-hop and rap mogul’s decades of influence on the music industry and his incomparable success: he had two chart-topping albums on the Billboard 200 and five #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
The news of his Global Icon Award came amid the legend gearing up to release the long-awaited “Love Album: Off The Grid,” which releases on Sept. 15, 2023.
Diddy (real name Sean Combs) is one of the biggest names in the music industry, known for creating the music production company Bad Boy Entertainment in 1993.
His name is tied to some of the greatest works he produced with stars like Mary J. Blige, Biggie Smalls, Mariah Carey, Boys II Men, SWV, Babyface, Method Man, New Edition, Faith Evans, Lil’ Kim, TLC, Aretha Franklin and more.
Diddy was also known for his own hot tracks, “Bad Boy for Live,” “Satisfy You,” “It’s All About the Benjamins,” “Victory,” “Been Around the World” and “I’ll Be Missing You.”
Along with releasing “The Love Album: Off the Grid,” Diddy is also supporting his son, King Combs, as he pursues his music career, which he saw success with his hit “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop,” featuring Kodak Black.
In an interview with Billboard News, Diddy explained that he takes a hands-off approach to his son’s career.
“I’ve been extra hard on him and really just telling him the truth that, ‘Yo, you’re my son, and you have to deal with these things,’” Diddy said. “I never picked a beat for him. I never set up a meeting for him. Then now to see him do it himself, and we’re out here doing it together, I didn’t imagine that.”
The VMAs air on MTV and occur at New Jersey’s Prudential Center on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. EST.
