Tina Turner has sold her music catalog to BMG that includes her likeness, image, name and decades of hit music from the legendary artist, reported Rolling Stone.
With the sale, BMG is not only getting six decades of Turner’s music but also sold her share of her recordings, her music publishing writer’s share, neighboring rights and name, image and likeness.
In other words, although BMG is the buyer, they have certainly been blessed.
“Tina Turner’s musical journey has inspired hundreds of millions of people around the world and continues to reach new audiences. We are honored to take on the job of managing Tina Turner’s musical and commercial interests,” BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch said on the company’s website.
Turner’s move is in line with what other artists with more than substantial musical legacies are doing, particularly in the wake of the pandemic.
Last year, Bob Dylan sold his entire catalog to Universal Music Publishing. Earlier this year, Neil Young sold 50 percent of his catalog to Hipgnosis.
Although BMG has not disclosed the financial terms of the Turner deal, Business Music Worldwide estimated the value to be at least $50 million.
Earlier this year, Turner was the subject of an HBO documentary of her life entitled Tina. At the time, she called it her way of thanking her fans while offering one last farewell.
But she is confident in the sale and in BMG’s ability to handle the treasures she gave the world.
“Like any artist, the protection of my life’s work, my musical inheritance, is something personal. I am confident that with BMG and Warner Music my work is in professional and reliable hands,” Turner said.
At the end of this month, the legend, who was the first Black artist and woman to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, will be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame for the second time.
