Creator, lead writer, and actress of Abbott Elementary Quinta Brunson became the first Black woman in Emmy history to earn three nominations in the comedy category alone.
On July 12, Brunson was nominated for all three categories. Receiving nominations for lead actress in a comedy, writing for a comedy, and outstanding comedy series, she commemorated it in an Instagram post.
“I’m still a bit speechless. Congrats to the entire Abbott Elementary cast and crew,” she wrote.

On Good Morning America’s recap of nominees’ speeches, Brunson said, “What an honor to be nominated by the Television Academy. Creating this show has been the greatest gift and to have it recognized in this way is the dream. It’s a joy we get to share with the amazing people who watched our first season. None of this would be possible without my incredible, supportive EP’s Justin Halpern, Randall Einhorn & Patrick Schumacker, our incredible writers room, our insanely talented cast, and the hard-working teams at ABC and WBTV for helping to bring Abbott Elementary to life. Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank teachers. Thanks for being our inspiration.” She said appreciatively.
Abbott Elementary swept a handful of Emmy nominations for its lauded work. With the inclusion of Brunson’s nominations, Jenelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Tyler James Williams received supporting actor nominations. Her co-stars were celebrated in Brunson’s Instagram post.
She captioned the post, “I’m still a bit speechless. Congrats to the entire Abbott Elementary cast and crew.” Fans of the show gave thanks in the comments, assuring Brunson that every win was well deserved, “your VISION was crystal clear, and it shows. prayed this would happen for you but already knew it would!”
Categorized as a workplace mockumentary, Abbott Elementary centers around a group of invested teachers and an altruistic but tone-deaf principal working with students in the Philadelphia public school system. The show navigates a persistent lack of resources and support from the system; all the staff hilariously attempt to help all their students in all aspects of their life, both academic and personal. They all fight against the school system consistently disappointing the children.
