According to VIBE, Nick Cannon has defended rapper DaBaby for making homophobic slurs during his performance at the Rolling Loud Musical Festival in Miami last month. Cannon was a guest on The Breakfast Club on August 9 and spoke on the situation with DaBaby.
As Sister 2 Sister reported, DaBaby made some homophobic comments while on stage during the music festival and was quickly dropped from several gigs. He also received messages from Madonna and Elton John condemning his comments.
Cannon defended the rapper and said that mob mentality had canceled someone who needs guidance. He also said that DaBaby sees apologizing as a weakness and may lack the maturity to apologize properly. DaBaby apologized for his remarks but later deleted the post from Instagram. Cannon also noted that the rapper is grieving over the loss of his brother and father.
“First of all, I think not only in the Black community—and I’ve experienced it—but definitely just men a lot of times, we have that ego. We believe apologizing is weakness when it actually takes great strength to step up to anyone and say, ‘I was wrong.'”
“I know Baby. And that’s a strong brother…That man just lost his pops, his brother…and still to have that big smile that he has every day, knowing everything. To say ‘I’m sorry,’ that’s a self-proclamation. To apologize is an action. And to actually repent or atone is actually the next level because now you’re trying to understand, there’s education involved with that, there’s actually community involved with that. And that’s the other thing too, where I challenge all these people who actually want to cancel somebody, and even specifically in DaBaby’s situation, let’s use this as an opportunity for education. Because that’s what happened in my scenario.”
“The Gigolo” rapper was in a similar situation after making offensive comments about the Jewish community. ViacomCBS fired him last July for the remarks. He apologized and promised to educate himself about the Jewish community with their help and guidance, and the network forgave him.
The Wild ’N Out host, who has seven children, also discussed fatherhood during his Breakfast Club appearance. After being asked why he had so many children, Charlamagne Tha God said, “It’s not the number of kids, though. I guess people question the different babies’ mothers.”
After Cannon went on about not subscribing to society’s idea of what a family should be, Charlamagne joked, “I respect that game you’re running on these ladies.”
