In 2004, Destiny’s Child released the music video for their song “Cater 2 U,” a romantic ballad about treating your significant other and showing appreciation. But now, nearly 17 years after the hit song’s debut, Black Twitter fans are blasting and dragging the tune, claiming that it represents “pick me” behavior and that the song’s lyrics are simply doing the most.
For years, many fans have admitted to “Cater 2 U” being a guilty pleasure, but others have had their issues with it. Featuring lyrics like “Let me help you/ Take off your shoes/ Untie your shoe strings/ Take off your cufflinks/ What you want to eat, boo?” Destiny’s Child group members Michelle Williams, Kelly Rowland and Beyoncé famously performed the song at the 2005 BET Awards while offering on-stage lap dances to Terrence Howard, Nelly and Magic Johnson.
Though the song peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, many argue that the song hasn’t aged all that well since 2004.
