After seven seasons on ABC, the award-winning comedy series Black-ish has been renewed for its eighth and final season. Featuring actors Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson, and Laurence Fishburne in the show’s ensemble cast, show creator Kenya Barris announced the news on his Instagram page Friday, acknowledging the dedicated cast as the Black family spotlight the series is known for.

“To ALL the people in the world I love, honor, respect and care for, it is both exciting and bittersweet to share that black-ish has been RENEWED by ABC for its EIGHTH… and FINAL SEASON,” Barris said in the announcement. “In this day and age, it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for.”

Black-ish began in 2014 and quickly became a fan favorite. Following the show’s premiere, it consistently pulled in millions of views per episode and soon snagged the attention of the Golden Globes and the Primetime Emmys.

Acknowledging the impact of the show’s supporters, Barris continued, “ This show has changed my life in so many ways, and I am so proud of the conversations we’ve started along the way,” adding  “None of this would have been possible without our audience and supporters, who have championed the show every step of the journey; allowing us to change not just the narrative of Black Families but Family, Culture, and the World in general.”

The show’s Johnson Family wouldn’t be complete without their witty and loveable children, played by Marsai Martin, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner and Miles Brown. Since the show’s 2014 premiere, Shahidi has made a big stamp on the Hollywood scene, starring in Black-ish’s spin-off series Grown-ish and several big-screen roles.

Martin, who recently broke records as the youngest executive producer in Hollywood, has gained prominence both on and off the screen. In 2019, the then 14-year-old starred in “Little,” a comedy film that she produced alongside Barris and Will Packer.

Are you ready for the end of Black-ish, or do you think the show still has more potential? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
