Court records claim Kanye West acted a fool during a court deposition related to a multimillion-dollar lawsuit from MyChannel.
West gave quite the performance during a deposition this week, according to court documents obtained by AllHipHop. The rapper appeared in court via Zoom due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. He is currently battling a lawsuit from MyChannel, a video-technology company.
The drama stems from a broken agreement between West and the plaintiffs, who collaborated for an “oral joint venture partnership” in 2018, reported Digital Music News. After West promised MyChannel a $10 million investment, the company directed “100 percent of their attention” to Ye and his projects.
MyChannel claims they dedicated “more than $7 million in company resources…to develop, build-out, operate, and manage the Yeezy e-commerce business.” At the end of the year, it was clear to them West “had no real intention” of giving them the money. Additionally, he allegedly “abruptly terminated the parties’ oral partnership…and misappropriated MYC’s proprietary information and technology” for his Sunday Service shows.
After repeated attempts to secure an in-person deposition with West, the “All of the Lights” rapper appeared in court after an emergency motion from MyChannel’s legal team. The hearing only last minutes due to West’s behavior towards Michael Popok, a MyChannel attorney.
An emergency motion filed by MyChannel’s lawyers claimed West refused to answer their questions and referred to Popok as “boy” at least a dozen times. Court documents obtained by AllHipHop claim West “showed complete disdain for the deposition” and told Popok he was lucky to depose the “richest Black man in America and a Black Trump supporter.”
Additionally, West refused to put his phone down during the proceedings and bragged about his “mental genius-ness.” The papers also alleged the rapper asked Popok if he was “fucking stupid” during the hearing.
The deposition took a strange turn when West covered his face with “a full-face hood and head covering adorned with Jesus Christ’s image.” The mask made it difficult for anyone to understand West when he spoke and when asked to take it off, he said Popok didn’t “have the right to see his face.”
He never took the mask off. Instead, the filing stated the hearing ended after West turned his camera off and walked away. The motion also said his legal team was “unwilling and unable to counsel and properly admonish his bad faith conduct.”
“West’s bad faith efforts to sabotage the deposition will be viewed by the Court as one of the most outrageous and inappropriate deposition performances it has observed as well,” Ben J. Meiselas, another MyChannel attorney, told AllHipHop.
Chanel is seeking almost $63,000 in sanctions against West and an in-person deposition. The rapper has not responded to the filing.
