It’s no secret that actress-producer Issa Rae has a unique love of music, often choosing what song pairs best with a particular scene on her hit HBO series Insecure. But in a recent interview, the 36-year-old reportedly detailed her opinion on the music industry, saying that it’s “probably the worst industry that I have ever come across,” adding that it’s “an abusive industry” with “crooks and criminals.”

Sitting down with the Los Angeles Times following the end of Insecure, the L.A. native shared about listening to regional artists throughout her adolescence, “I remember when 2Pac died and that fueling so much pride in West Coast music. Artists like Suga Free and DJ Quik, and Dr. Dre — that was a representation of my city and such a distinct sound. No other city was making the sounds of L.A. music.”

Over the years, Rae has included music from Ty Dolla Sign, SZA, Goldlink and more on Insecure’s soundtrack. A known Drake fan, Rae has also featured his music throughout her HBO series and made a guest appearance in the rapper’s 2018 music video for “Nice For What.”

But when asked about her opinion on the music business, Rae reportedly admitted, “It’s probably the worst industry that I have ever come across. I thought Hollywood was crazy,” adding, “The music industry, it needs to start over. Conflicts of interest abound. Archaic mentalities. Crooks and criminals! It’s an abusive industry, and I really feel for artists that have to come up in it.”

“I don’t want to get too specific, but even in crafting our own deals [for soundtracks] with labels or artists, it would be so convoluted.” the 36-year-old continued. “And finding out how artists were treated at other labels… Being a creator myself and knowing what I want in terms of a relationship with a production company or a producer, I’d like to think that we’re more artist-friendly than a lot of other labels and companies out there.”

“I want to revamp things,” the Emmy-nominated actress also shared.
