A 26-year-old California woman is on life support after getting shot in the head while driving on the 101 Freeway.

According to CBS News, the incident happened on Dec. 17, around 5:15 p.m. The 26-year-old, Ronni Newt, was driving along the 101 Freeway’s northbound lanes in Tarzana, near the White Oak Avenue off-ramp. Ronni’s car was shot multiple times, and she was hit once in the head, causing her to crash her car.

“She had got off work, she went home, she got dressed, and she was driving to the valley to visit a couple friends,” Ronni’s father, Robert Newt, said. “As a father, as a parent, I pray all the time that this would never happen.”

Emergency personnel was called, and Ronni was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and placed on life support.

“Doctors told us she probably wouldn’t make it through the night,” Robert said. “She did. She’s a fighter.”

The investigation is still ongoing as the California Highway Patrol figures out who would do something like this. However, the Newt family is having a difficult time since no information has surfaced, leaving them to encourage and urge others to come forward.

“No one is saying, ‘It’s this color car, it’s that kinda make of a car, or you know, that they saw anything,” Robert said. “We know this stuff happens. We all casually drive on the freeway, and we see things. If you saw something—please call.”

The family has hope that Ronni will make it through, especially after she showed slight signs of brain activity recently. While it’s unfortunate the incident happened during the holidays, the family is hoping and praying for a miracle.

“As long as she’s fighting, we’re praying. We’re all fighting together.”

Anyone with information can contact CHP Southern Division’s Major Crimes Unit at 323-644-9550. For anonymous tips, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
