Vocal Powerhouse Deborah Cox To Be The First Black Woman Inducted Into The Canadian Music Hall of Fame

She will receive the honor and perform at the 51st Annual JUNO Awards on May 15.

R&B powerhouse Deborah Cox is finally being recognized in her native Canada with the country’s highest musical honor, and the singer is making history at the same time.

On March 29, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced that the 47-year-old songstress will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She will receive the honor and perform at the 51st Annual JUNO Awards on May 15 on television broadcasts throughout the country. According to the site,

Cox will make history as the first Black woman to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

The Torontonian also shared the news on her Instagram account.

“I’m getting inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame y’all,” she wrote.

“I feel incredibly grateful to experience this true milestone moment. Music has always been about community for me, and I am so thankful to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and CARAS for not only recognizing myself, but my family, friends and loving fans who have supported me and helped make my dream possible for the past 25+ years.”

Cox continued, “As the first Black woman inductee, I am honoured to have the chance to show our younger generations that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to with hard work, dedication and passion. I hope that my music can continue to bring peace, happiness and comfort to anyone who might need it and empower people of all ages to follow their dreams and believe in themselves.”

 

Cox’s peers congratulated her on the honor.

Vocalist Rahsaan Patterson said, “Awesome!!!! Congratulations Deborah!”

The singer’s career has spanned three decades. Some of her biggest hits include, “Sentimental” and “Nobody Supposed To Be Here.”
