Black girl magic was abundant at the NCAA’s collegiate gymnastics matchup between UCLA, ranked #22, and the University of Utah, ranked #3, on Friday.
The fly teammates, three-time national Level 10 vault champion Sekai Wright and Olympic silver medalist Jordan Chiles, showed up and out for Black History Month during the floor segment of the NCAA competition.
Although Sekai placed fourth overall in the floor routine with a 9.825 score, the graduating senior’s electrifying floor routine to a medley of DMX (he
passed away last April) hits quickly went viral. The explosive performance also highlighted Sekai’s dance skills. The talented tumbler hit dem folks, got light, and did the Aunt Jackie while incorporating the required elements into her floor piece.
Even though Sekai didn’t score a perfect ten with the judges, Black Twitter made it clear that the gymnast’s lit routine deserved tens across the board.
One Twitter user felt that the audience didn’t fully appreciate the Black excellence it was witnessing.
If Sekai’s phenomenal performance wasn’t enough, Jordan
put the icing on the cake with her perfect routine. The Olympian set the expectation for a kick a** performance by opening with a height-defying double layout. Jordan bopped and tumbled to hits by Normani, Lizzo and Doja Cat.Jordan’s routine and the required skills she opted to do were the most difficult of the night. Black Twitter went up for the champion gymnast.
Although Jordan executed a perfect floor routine and a near-perfect bar routine, UCLA lost to Utah by mere tenths of a point. UCLA did manage to obliterate its season’s best score by 1.25 points.
“At the end of the day, I’m just going out there and having fun,” Jordan said about the loss to Utah.
The squad is set to compete against Stanford on Feb. 12.
