Venus Williams Withdraws From U.S. Open Following Sister Serena’s Withdrawal From Final Grand Slam

According to a social media post shared on August 26, Venus Williams has officially withdrawn from the U.S. Open following Serena’s withdrawal.

As a caption to her video explaining that she’s withdrawing due to an injury, Venus said,  “Not the best news, everyone. I am joining @serenawilliams @rafaelnadal, and @rogerfederer on the injured list.
It’s still going to be a great US Open, and many thanks to the @usta for the wild card. I was looking forward to a great US Open, but it was not meant to be this year. I will be back as soon as I can….”

“And needless to say, I will be spending every moment of my free time rehabbing my leg so I can get back to the courts ASAP.  In fact, I’m literally in the gym right now! God speed!”

The previous day, Serena took to her social media and gave her fans and followers her reasoning for leaving the competition in a note-style written Instagram post.

Serena captioned her post, “a note and update from me.”

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring.” Serena shared in her message.

“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play,” she wrote. “I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering on from afar.”

“Thank you for your continued love and support,” Serena added. “I’ll see you soon.”

The Grio reported that the sisters’ departure from the tournament was the first time in 18 years that neither would be in the U.S. Open.
