If you’re into ‘90s-style R&B music, then you’ve likely been a fan of the smooth vocalizing male group Dru Hill and its charismatic lead singer Sisqó. Decades after the singer found mainstream success with his solo hit “Thong Song,” a resurfaced interview he had with InStyle in July 2017. The interview revealed the true and hilarious inspiration behind the song and prompted a viral moment on social media.
Last week, a Twitter user went viral after posting a portion of the interview, where Sisqó candidly revealed that a woman he was dating at the time led to the hit song.
“Sisqo talking about his inspiration for writing the thong song simply one of the best things I’ve ever heard,” they wrote online.
When asked if there was anything in his life that led to the “Thong Song,” Sisqó told InStyle about his former date, “I must’ve done something right over the course of dinner because I got treated to a more intimate gathering later on. We started to get all hot and heavy, she got undressed, and, lo and behold, I see something that I had never seen before—this article of clothing,”
“It was one of the most glorious things I’ve ever seen in my life. I was like, ‘What are you wearing?’” he continued, joking, “And she said, ‘Oh, this old thing? It’s a thong.’ I think that was when my hair turned blonde.”
Adding “she already had the cake, but she put the icing on it with the thong,” Sisqó then revealed that he went home and began writing the song and then told his friends about the new experience.

“A few days later, my cousin, Kidd, burst through the door—I thought there was a fire or somebody got hit by a car—and he was like, “I was with this girl last night and guess what she gave me?” And I quote: ‘That thong-th-thong-thong-thong,’” he continued to recount to InStyle.
“We burst out laughing. Then we laughed all the way to the bank. For the record, I gave him a big percentage of the song royalties.”
Sharing their thoughts on Twitter, fans quickly went up for the hilarious tale of thong discovery and songwriting success.
“This makes me want to be friends w/ Sisqo so I can just listen to him masterfully recounting funny anecdotes,” one person wrote under the viral tweet.
“This is excellent. And I love that he gave over a bunch of royalties to the cousin. It’s a cool move and the right thing to do,” another person added.
