Rapper Trina Gifted Key To Miami During First Annual “Trina Day,” ‘This Is Where It All Started’

Rapper Trina was honored by her hometown on Saturday with a key to Miami while celebrating the first annual “Trina Day,” named after her. 

According to the Miami Herald, a block party was held on Northwest 15th Avenue, as fans, family, and friends gathered to acknowledge the diamond princess and her philanthropic efforts in the community. The event included food trucks, live performances, prize giveaways, and other festivities. 

Hundreds of people flooded the Liberty City streets as Miami Mayor Francis Suarez presented the 47-year-old, born Katrina Taylor, a key to the city and a plaque to honor her late mother, Vanessa Taylor.

“On behalf of the City of Miami, it’s my honor and privilege to present you the keys to the City of Miami,” Suarez said as the crowd cheered. “‘Cause I know how much your momma meant to you … I have a little plaque for you in loving memory of your mother… 

These are the memories you don’t forget and you’re never going to forget her and what she meant to you and what you mean to us. So, it wouldn’t be proper to recognize you without recognizing her…”

A tearful Trina posed for a photo alongside Suarez while holding the plaque dedicated to her mother, who died from cancer in 2019. 

“I’m super grateful, super humbled by the opportunity,” the rapper said. 

She continued, “This is where it all started,” Trina told the crowd. “

All of this wouldn’t have happened without your support.”

The “Hustling” artist was born and raised in Miami and graduated from Northwest High School in 1992. Trina’s father owned a store on 15th Avenue and a mural of her face is currently painted on the building where her father’s store was. Corey Evans, a local artist, painted the mural in August 2020. However, he made a few adjustments to the piece ahead of Trina Day. 

“Around here, Trina is the queen,” Evans said.

“To have my art connected with her and be a part of Trina Day, I was happy,” he noted. 

Miami-Dade Commissioner Keon Hardemon also presented Trina with a key to the county. 

“She’s an example to the young women and men,” Hardemon said after gifting the Miami rapper with the key. “She’s no different from the kids in Liberty City now with a story to tell.”

Trina performed several of her top-charting hits and members of the crowd released orange balloons in remembrance of her late mother.
