Oprah Winfrey Threw Her Father Vernon A Surprise Appreciation Barbeque So She Could ‘[Give] My Father His Flowers’

Oprah Winfrey planned her father an appreciation surprise party on July 4 to celebrate his life.

The 68-year-old media guru brought together Vernon Winfrey’s close friends and family to honor him and his life. Oprah said all of it was a surprise bash to celebrate Vernon – who is ill – while he could still enjoy it.

In a video recorded by Gayle King posted to Instagram, she explained the profound thought process behind the party.

“So, I’ve been planning a backyard barbecue that’s more than a backyard barbecue; it’s for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day,” Oprah dubbed the day, standing in front of a sign that read, “Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day.”

She continued, “Because my father is ill and so we wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate him while he is able to receive the joy, so that’s what we’re doing receiving the joy.” 

“He doesn’t even know this is for him. He thinks it’s a Fourth of July thing; he doesn’t even know it’s for him,” Oprah said brightly, leading the camera and King around to point out all the food.

There were many barbecue food options, from burgers and brisket to fried chicken – she then directed all the attention to the celebrated guest, Vernon, who sat surrounded by the people who love him. 

“My dad’s a barber, so we put him in the barber chair,” Oprah narrated to the camera, “We put him in the barber chair.”

The post’s caption read, “Giving my father his ‘flowers’ while he’s still well enough to smell them. Happy 4th of July as you gather with your family and friends. Remember to celebrate each other.”
