A woman’s interesting culinary quirk caused an uproar on Twitter after channeling her inner Rihanna at a beach on Sunday.
Luxury swimwear designer Damarys posted a video of herself eating a mango in the ocean at a beach in her native Roatan, Honduras. Still, before taking a bite of the delectable fruit– she dipped the juicy treat into the water.
“Went to Roatan to dip my mango in the ocean like Rihanna! And it’s so good,” Damarys wrote.
The Garifuna beauty’s eating choice had Twitter up in arms. Many users on the platform couldn’t help but think of the organisms and fecal matter the ocean contained.
One Twitter user posted an image that would make a person reevaluate eating anything from the sea.
Earlier this month, the inspiration behind Damarys’ ballsy snack was filmed during a trip to Barbados doing the same thing.
A very-pregnant Rihanna was photographed in her island home, standing in the Caribbean Sea, dipping a mango into the saltwater and eating it. The “Man Down” singer
shared a Bajan cultural custom in Vogue Magazine’s May issue. She explained that washing fruit in the ocean was typical in Barbados and that she loved the taste.“In Barbados, we take our fruits to the ocean and soak them,” Rihanna revealed. “Trust me. It really is a thing.” While many people might think it’s perfectly fine, physicians don’t recommend the practice.
WebMD reported that bacteria in the ocean could be dangerous and causes “90 million cases of stomach, respiratory, ear, eye, and skin-related illnesses every year in the U.S., while fewer than 1,500 cases of necrotizing fasciitis
(aka flesh-eating bacteria).”“Fecal matter, like from sewage discharge, is responsible for a lot of the pollution,” says Mark Mattson, president of Swim Drink Fish, an organization that promotes safe water. “After it rains, urban beaches are often contaminated from the runoff. And in rural areas, it’s agricultural pollution.”
Hopefully, Rihanna and Damarys got the memo.
