Lizzo Gets “Emotional” Retelling Her Relationship With The Late Prince

Lizzo and Prince were slated to have a collaborative EP coming out before his passing in 2016.

In an appearance on The Breakfast Club on July 15, “About Damn Time” singer, Lizzo opened up about her friendship with the late, great Prince. Before his death in 2016, Prince was set to produce an album with Lizzo, and she talked about the extent of her relationship with the man that influenced her career.

DJ Envy asked the singer about some of her most significant memories of the iconic rock star after she expressed how important he was to her.

“God, it makes me so sad thinking and talking about it,” Lizzo said during the interview.  “I got invited to Paisley Park last minute to see Prince perform on piano,” She told the interviewers that she was hoping to hear “Purple Rain.”

Despite how doubtful it was, she was enamored by Prince’s all-white outfit.

“It was one of the most amazing concerts, and then he did ‘Purple Rain,’ She explained how incredibly emotional the song was for her. “And when he was performing ‘Purple Rain,’ he started getting emotional and started crying towards the end.”

Lizzo recalled how incredibly fired up the crowd was.

“I gotta put that song in a different spot,” Lizzo said Prince told the crowd. She wiped away her tears as she remembered how beautiful that moment was to her.

She continued to describe how she thought the album would’ve sounded if it had been produced.

“I think he wanted me to get weird with it, but you know, we’ll never know [and] that makes me sad,” she shared; Lizzo admitted that she still had many of the emails from the discussion of the collaboration.

The singer told them that she would never forget how Prince supported her upcoming career back then. “That was such a big deal to me,” she voiced honestly. “I do a lot of things to make Prince proud.”
