Jasmine Davis Leaving ‘The Chi’ Before Season 5

Some think it is in response to the show's affiliation with a new controversial legislation.

A teaser trailer for the upcoming season was recently released, and guess who was absent?

Davis’ performance as the only transgender woman character on the show, Imani, was a fan favorite.

However, Davis has decided to exit the series.

She made the announcement via Twitter.

One fan asked why she was leaving on Instagram. Davis responded, “The reasons will be discussed at a later time.”

Speculation circulated that Davis left the show amid a controversial bill passing. Her inclusion of #disneyproduction in her tweet could be about the current controversy for Disney’s sponsorship of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

Last month, the legislation was signed into law last Governor Ron DeSantis censors classroom discussions surrounding sexual orientation or expression.

However, Davis wrote in a later tweet not to assume that her departure is a political stance.

Filmed in Chicago and produced by 20th Television, “The Chi is a timely coming-of-age drama series centered on a group of residents who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.”

Season 5 of The Chi will premiere on Friday, June 24, at 9 p.m. ET.
