Hollywood Couple Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance Producing Reimagining of ‘The Preacher’s Wife’

The holiday classic is coming up with a fresh new look.

Hollywood power couple Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance of Bassett Vance Productions (BVP) have partnered with Anthony Hemingway Productions to film a “reimagining” of the 1996 hit film The Preachers Wife.

Lynnette Ramirez, BVP’s Head of Development and AHP’s VP of Development & Production Whitney Davis, announced the production of the film on November 3 via a press release, according to The Grio.

The film’s original version saw Vance as Rev. Henry Biggs and the late singer Whitney Houston as his wife, Julia. In the movie, Biggs gets a visit from an angel named Dudley, played by two-time Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, who gets sent to guide his family and their neighborhood church.

According to Deadline, Hemingway, who is set to direct the new film, spoke of the upcoming reimagining.

“Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year. To be reimagining this classic and beloved holiday story is a gift,” said Hemingway. “When Whitney Davis brought this idea to me, I instinctively called Courtney, and we knew instantly that we’d be working together to bring this uplifting story to new audiences. I couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with my friends Courtney and Angela, as well as our amazing teams at Bassett Vance Productions and Anthony Hemingway Productions.”

The Preacher’s Wife was directed by the late Penny Marshall and has become a holiday classic since its release.

The film’s soundtrack was certified triple platinum by the RIAA and is the biggest selling gospel album of all time, as Houston sang many of the songs featured.

Hemingway also recently worked with Vance on the film Aretha and previously collaborated with the actor as a director and producer on The People v. O.J. Simpson, which is the first season of FX anthology American Crime Story, and earned both Emmys.
