Dell and Sonya Curry, Parents of Steph Curry, To Divorce After 33 Years of Marriage

Fans are ready to shoot their shot at Sonya Curry after learning she filed for divorce from her husband Dell Curry after over three decades of marriage.

TMZ Sports reported Sonya, mother of NBA great Steph Curry, initiated the divorce on June 14. The couple confirmed their split in a statement to People Magazine. In addition to Steph, the couple share son Seth and daughter Sydel.

“After exploring a trial separation over the past year and much thoughtful consideration, we have decided to end our marriage. As this comes with a great deal of sadness, our focus and desire is for our family’s continued happiness,” the statement read.

“We are so thankful for all the many blessings and successes! We stay committed to and supportive of our children and grandchildren and will remain on connected paths,” Dell and Sonya continued. “We ask that our privacy be respected and prayer for our family as we move forward.”

The couple met while they were attending Virginia Tech University in the 1980s. They eventually married in 1988, the year Steph was born. Seth was born in 1990, and Sydel came four years later. None of the Curry children have addressed their parents’ divorce publicly.

Dell was in the NBA from 1986 until his retirement in 2002. During his time in the league, he played for several teams, including the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Charlotte Hornets. He played as star guard for the Hornets for 10 seasons. Dell has been a color commentator for the team since 2009.

Sonya, a former volleyball star, focused on running a Christian Montessori School and raising their family. She also became a fixture at her sons’ basketball games. Steph is the star of the Golden State Warriors while Seth plays for the Philadelphia 76ers player.

News of Sonya’s singleness was well-received by fanboys who joked about having a chance with the 55-year-old mom.

“Sonya Curry filing for divorce? I see I’m finna be Riley, Canon, and Ryan Curry new step paw paw,” joked one person.

“Steph Curry parents got a divorce, and I’m boutta be his stepdad,” tweeted another.

The thirst is too real.

The divorce proceedings are ongoing.
