On Thursday, July 20, The Washington Post published an exclusive interview with actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish, where she revealed she suffered eight miscarriages.
One of the most disturbing things that protruded in the interview was that Haddish is a busy entertainer who juggles movie projects and voiceovers, making fans laugh despite enduring one of the most traumatic moments a woman could go through — miscarriage.
According to the interview, Haddish engaged in a phone conversation with her doctor’s nurse to reveal a recent miscarriage that “slowed her down for a couple of days,” yet no one noticed. On top of that, she had charity appearances she planned to commit to. Yet, she didn’t let her harrowing situation stop her, nor did she throw it in people’s faces.
The nurse asked if she was okay, and Haddish gave a shocking answer.
“Well, I’m going to be honest with you,” she explained to the nurse. “This would be my eighth one. I’ve got a uterus shaped like a heart. It just won’t keep anything in.”
She didn’t reveal who she got pregnant by.
According to Cleveland Clinic, the type of uterus Haddish referred to is called a bicornuate uterus. It’s an irregularly shaped uterus (heart-shaped) that appears to have two sides instead of the “one hollow cavity.”
“It’s a rare congenital condition that can cause complications during pregnancy. It can only be treated with surgery.”
Unlike a typical uterus, where the hollow cavity expands during baby, enabling the baby to grow, a bicornuate one causes problems because it cannot extend completely.
Those with a bicornuate uterus are at increased risk of miscarriage and preterm labor.
Despite the odds against her, Haddish has been looking to adopt and even took parenting classes. Yet, her childhood full of abuse and foster homes causes her to hesitate and think about her choice to join motherhood.
