Chris Brown Sued Over ‘Privacy’ Song For Alleged Sampling of Dancehall Track, ‘Tight Up Skirt’

Chris Brown has been in quite the amount of legal trouble lately, and it seems he’s not getting out any time soon. Brown and Sony Music Entertainment are being sued for sampling Red Rat’s 1997 dancehall song “Tight Up Skirt” without permission.

Hot New Hip Hip reported that when Brown’s album where the song is featured on dropped, Red Rat claimed that he was “getting many calls left and right from many people asking me about my thoughts regarding [Chris Brown] sampling ‘Tight Up Skirt,’ and all I can say is, ‘Give God all the glory.’”

On Rat’s track, he’s heard singing, “Hey you, girl inna the tight up skirt! /You make me head swell ’til me blood vessel burst.”

“Ayy you, gal, inna di tight up skirt /Get that ass in the bed, I’m a lock the door,” sings Brown in his rendition.

According to The Shade Room, Greensleeves Publishing, which owns the rights to the track, claimed that Brown snatched

parts of “Tight Up Skirt” for “Privacy” and “took the core musical feature” of the song without permission.

Although it’s unclear if Brown used enough likeness in his song to the original, Greensleeves argues that Chris used an essential part of Red Rat’s song added that the verse is “the hook and dominates the chorus sections, occurring a total of 18 times throughout the song.”

“This includes both the initial lyrics which occur a total of six times and the lyric variations,” they added.

The publishing company is suing for $1.5 million in damages.

Brown has seen himself in a world of trouble lately.

About a week ago, he was hit with a lawsuit from a woman alleging he snatched her weave off, and a few following that, an unidentified housekeeper filed a suit alleging she was mauled by his dog.
