Sha’Carri Richardson recently won the women’s 100-meter race during the 2022 Duval County Challenge American Track League last weekend.

The event was held on May 21 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, and the first time Richardson has competed since losing at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Italy last September, Essentially Sports reported.

While the 22-year-old had a rough start at 11.37 with a headwind of 1.5 m/s in the fourth, she ultimately redeemed herself by coming in first place at 11.27 seconds while competing in the rain.

Jonathan Gault, staff writer for LetsRun.com, took to Twitter and described the Dallas native’s impressive win.

“This is interesting. About an hour after the first race, some women from the 100 in Jax doubled back and raced again in the opposite direction. Didn’t hear a wind reading, but Sha’Carri Richardson looked a lot better — ran 11.27 and won the race despite celebrating early,” Gault tweeted.

Gault also said that prelims were initially scheduled, but officials canceled the race due to weather conditions.

“As for why this race happened…initially there were supposed to be prelims and a final but that was scrapped after schedule was changed due to weather. First race also came into a 1.5 headwind. For the second race, they flipped the orientation of the track,” he added.

When sprinter Aleia Hobbs won the first race earlier in the day, many attendees claimed that the rerun was due to camera problems. In contrast, others said the women were granted a rerun after the male competitors were allowed to run tailwind in the race.

Richarson reportedly backed out of three scheduled meets this season, including the highly-anticipated matchup against Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Kip Keino Classic.

On Saturday, she competed against Elaine Thompson-Herah in the 100m at the Pre Classic in Eugene, Oregon, which aired live on NBC Sports.

The 22-year-old is expected to run again on June 4 at the Star Athletics Invitational.
